The LR-TDV8 4.4-litre with parallel sequential turbocharging replaces the outstanding LR-TDV8 3.6-litre and is unique to the Range Rover. An all-new ‘super-diesel’, the LR-TDV8 combines superior power and massive torque with unparalleled levels of refinement. Despite the extra performance, this sublime V8 engine is cleaner too, delivering even lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than its predecessor and meeting the stringent EU5 emissions standards. The headline news, though, is that the combined cycle fuel consumption of the new LR-TDV8 4.4-litre is just 30.1mpg, making this the first Range Rover ever to better 30mpg.With 313PS and 700Nm torque, the Range Rover’s new powertrain matches power with conscience, reducing CO2 emissions by an impressive 14 percent. The new diesel engine is helped in this respect by its marriage to an impressive new, electronically controlled, ZF 8HP70, 8-speed automatic gearbox tuned by Land Rover engineers to combine silky smooth shifting with exceptionally rapid response and outstanding fuel economy. This daunting combination is enough to catapult the Range Rover from rest to 60mph in a mere 7.5 seconds and complete the 50mph-75mph dash in just 5.1 seconds.Available only on 4.4-litre LR-TDV8 models, this ‘smart’ transmission integrates with the diesel engine to deliver the most efficient operating regime in all conditions. To reflect the performance of the new 4.4-litre LR-TDV8, diesel models are fitted with the same Brembo-based braking system fitted to the 5.0-litre LR-V8 supercharged model. Providing the immense stopping power required for only the highest performing vehicles, the system comprises 380mm ventilated front discs with unique, lightweight aluminium six-piston opposed action monoblock calipers. 365mm ventilated discs with single piston sliding calipers are fitted at the rear.For 2011, the Range Rover retains the same class-leading 5.0-litre LR-V8, supercharged petrol engine married to the ZF HP28 6-speed automatic transmission introduced in 2010. Developing 510PS and 625Nm torque the Supercharged LR-V8 will take the Range Rover from 0-60mph in a breath-taking 5.9 seconds. The 2011 Range Rover is further enhanced by improvements to the Terrain Response® system in the form of Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control. Inside the cabin there are optional illuminated treadplates for the front doors, new transmission controls for the diesel model, and improvements to the entertainment system. Land Rover keeps tinkering with the Range Rover, in a bid to maintain its spot as the pinnacle of SUVs. It's an extensive overhaul for the 2007 model year car, with the Terrain Response off-road optimsation gadget fitted and a cabin overhaul to improve safety, ergonomics, air flow and stowage. But the most significant change is the launch of a twin-turbo 3.6-litre V8 diesel engine, which Land Rover expects to power 85 percent of the Rangies it sells in Europe. Only 3.6 litres? But there's no replacement for displacement... With Audi's V8 TDi displacing 4.2 litres and VW's Touareg running a 5.0-litre V10, Land Rover's diesel looks like it's turning up to the party very late and without any booze. So why is it only 3.6 litres in capacity? 'We did the performance and economy sums, and it's adequate,' says a bullish Paul Walker, chief programme engineer. Landie's first ever V8 diesel is equipped with the latest combustion technology, including a third generation common rail injection system, to boost power while reining in consumption and emissions. Twin variable geometry turbochargers respond quickly to eliminate lag, delivering hefty low-end torque (295 lb ft is on tap from just 1250rpm) and more top-end power. Peak power is 272bhp, peak torque 472lb ft. That's just 7lb ft off the Audi lump, and 61lb ft down on the VW V10. Or, put it another way, adequate. Combined fuel consumption is 25.1mpg, which Land Rover vows is easily attainable in real-world driving conditions. The TDV8 replaces the ancient, BMW-sourced TD6. To compare them, the Land Rover propaganda team dished out more percentages than a maths GCSE course. The V8 has 54 percent more power, 64 percent more torque, it's 32 percent quicker from 0 to 62mph and it's 75 percent quieter. Whislt a superb car it feels less "solid" on the road than the 2006. It feels less sure footed handling, particulalrly on medium fast bends and I just cannot help thinking the brakes are "less solid" feeling. In fact yesterday I had to press much harder to slow abruptly on the motorway than I ever remember on the 2006. Parked up next to my old one when I picked it up I noticed Brembo disc brake calipers on the 2006, and no branding on the 2010. My concern here is, am I just paranoid about this, or has anyone else noticed the same. Also, does anyone in know have any information. My dealer says "they have rebranded the Brembo's as land Rover", but I feel I really do have poorer brakes and suspension, which is a serious safety issue. The dealer is wrong about the brakes though. The handling difference is subtle; I wondered if they had put inferior brakes on had they done the same with the suspension units and dampers. Strange logic to me; a SC or TDV8 version both weigh the same and at 70mph both need extremely good brakes as they are heavy cars. Perhaps Tata should offer "the best brakes" as an option. This would not only be taken up by most people, but show the utter farce that they have created. Very good to hear from you that what I suspected is true!
