Based on the short-wheelbase 90, the Defender SVX is available as station wagon or soft-top, and just 1800 are being produced for sale worldwide. The Defender's a hell of a thing, an institution – a car you should drive before you die. Or before Land Rover kills it. Whichever. So what's so special about the Land Rover Defender SVX? To get the full SVX hit go for the soft-top version. Every SVX gets metallic black paint and satin black 60th anniversary decals (making these about as subtle as possible, despite their door- and bonnet-filling size), silver detailing including the front grille (not the most successful aspect of the design...), and unique clear-lens lights – including the alarmingly contemporary LED rears. Then there's the reinforced aluminium front undershield, and flash looking 'diamond turned' alloys. But only the soft-top includes a standard fit roll-cage. Since you're all thinking it we may as well say that, yes, this does look like it came from the Lara Croft accessory catalogue. But like the original open Land Rovers, the SVX soft-top stacks its spare wheel behind the front seats and features a flat load bed – complete with useful lockbox hidden underneath. I love it, except for the grill. As a weekend toy it can't be beaten, a suspension lift and 33'' tyres complete the madness and my only difficulty is driving my other toys and keeping the miles down. I will probably buy a second one and put it away, the chances are Landrover will be out of business in 24 months with their sales down something like 60%. 30 November 2008 14:37 Grant0610 says RE: Land Rover Defender SVX 90 soft-top CAR review This price is mind blowing for this car but probably worth it. It may be it's swansong as well. It is incredibly fit for purpose and that is what some people forget. As a 4x4 it makes the BMW X5 look like a Fiat Panda 4x4. Mind you that might be a diservice to the Panda! We know what the Defender is for. And i definitely believe LR should make sure there's a Defender 60 years from now. Heck.. if it's not Defender, how will scientists, researchers, technicians etc get to those remote locations? Don't tell me a hummer! (btw.. I hate those things) My cousin had a 40 yr old Defender top removed... it was so much fun when we went off roading! I mean.. FUUUUUUN! One time he drove it up a 65-70 degree steep hill. I have a hate love affair with it. I know it is a lot of money for the badge but it is more than a car. It drives like shit, doesn’t turn, expensive, consumes a lot, noisy, no luxury,... but all of that doesn’t matter. Why?? It is a Defender…. When driving and adding all these negative points together it all makes sense. There are way better cars but there is no care like it. Auto Express Car Reviews Text: James Foxall / Photos: Matt RicharsonApril 2008 Rating: What better way to celebrate your 60th birthday... than by refusing to grow old gracefully? That’s exactly what the Land Rover Defender is aiming to do. In fact, the firm is hitting back at suggestions that it should pension off its mud-plugging legend by revealing the most thrilling version yet!The SVX is essentially a standard Defender 90 with some cosmetic up-dates. It will be offered as both a station wagon and the soft-top version seen here in prototype guise. This is the first time the roofless model has been sold in the UK for 20 years, and Land Rover has come up with an all-new hood which is made from the sort of high-quality cloth you would expect to see on a drop-top Jaguar. It stows in a solid box beneath the boot floor.But the most obvious difference between the SVX and a regular Defender is the metallic black paint. Combined with a silver rollcage, tubular side steps and unique five-spoke alloy wheels, it gives the 4x4 a tougher look. Arguably the best bit of the makeover is saved for the front, where there’s a restyled grille with clear light lenses. Inside, Land Rover’s given the SVX new seats in an effort to address the Defender’s perennial problem of limited elbow room. It’s a minor improvement and the one-piece Recaro chairs are certainly supportive, although taller drivers will still feel too squeezed for comfort in the utilitarian cabin. This anniversary model also comes with a Garmin sat-nav unit and an iPod connection, while there’s a new audio system complete with a subwoofer in the centre console. It’s a nice touch, but a little redundant once you’re underway, because road, wind and engine noise will drown out whatever you’re listening to. On-road, the SVX is like other new Defenders as it’s noisy compared to modern SUVs and vibrates like a car from another era. The new six-speed manual is easy to use, and other controls, particularly the clutch, require less effort than previous models – only the high/low ratio transfer box is awkward to use. And let’s face it, if you’ve bought a Defender you’ll be using it, as this car is at its best off-road, and covers terrain that would defeat most modern vehicles. A £30,495 price tag ensures the SVX will appeal to a rarefied group of customers, but Land Rover shouldn’t find it difficult to sell the 300 cars it’s planning to build. New clothes can’t halt the march of time, and a new paint job plus some shiny bits can’t disguise a continually ageing driving experience. However it’s not all bad news. For fans of the model who want to make a statement, the Defender is peerless off-road and SVX trim certainly sets it apart from lesser models. TBA Request further information Vehicle updated on 22 November 2010 2009 MOUNTAIN TRUST CHARITY AMBULANCE CONVERSION We were contacted by Land Rover Monthly about a possibilty of converting a standard 1987 110 station wagon into a fully fledged ambulance. This project was the brain child of Andrew Ahmad-Cooke - to ship out a vehicle which could visit the villages in and around the Pokhara Valley in Nepal and cope with the mountainous terain, fording deep rivers etc. It was in part prompted by the story of a woman in her thities who had no one to help her and suffered from a 6 inch long tumour in her spine which was preventing her from using her legs. She literally dragged herself by her arms to Manipal Hospital from a remote village - with no means to pay for care. Surgeons contacted the Mountain Trust and agreed to pay the £200 to cover drugs and bandages etc. necessary for the operation and medical staff gave their work for free. The following day in post-op she could for the first time in years move one of her legs. She has since made a full recovery. We replaced many mechanical components without spoiling the well used tatty look so that Hugh could travel around reliably and in relative comfort. When it returned to Hugh at River Cottage he was mightily impressed with the result.
