Have Land Rover ever recommend any larger tyres, especially Mud Terrain than the ones listed in the Owners Manual 205/80R16 and 235/75R16 ? There are weird conflicting regulations in Aus the national ones are over ridden by state regs. Max tyre diameters are based on the largest tyre recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, Qld + 15mm Nat +50mm. Thanks Hey Guest! Not Registered? Join today! If the question is "what's the tyre regulations in my state of Australia" then you're better off on an Aus 4x4 forum, this is a UK site (ending .co.uk) and 95% of people here are from the UK. The 4wd community here is pushing to have uniform regulations. But even so National and State regs give an increase in diameter based on the manufacturers max tyre size. The Owners manual lists 245/70R16 as the largest alternative does anyone know if there was a larger tyre listed anywhere? The reason for the question is having a decent Mud terrain tyreand still being covered by insurance. Fitting The system is easy to fit. No cutting, drilling or welding to the chassis is required . The kit fits to the standard (original chassis) holes and uses existing bolts/threaded holes. In some cases the drilling of two holes are required to mount the reservoir to the body panel / radiator frame. The system can be fitted in one day. If required, it can be converted back to the original steering system in a matter of hours. Personal kit / conversion We like to see our power steering as a system that belongs to the driver not to the vehicle. This is because it's very easy to take the system off the vehicle and convert it back to it's original steering, in case you want to change Land Rovers. Safety The system is very reliable and safe as it has proven in the last 40 years when this kit came to the market in Spain. The safety is provided by the simple fact that in case of hose breakage / engine stall / loss of the hydraulic pressure, the vehicle will not be left without steering nor will it cause the ram cylinder to block, instead it will allow the steering to move and to act as a normal manual steering. This is because the specialy designed valve system in the power steering cylinder allows the hydraulic fluid circulate without resistance through the system while the steering wheel is moved in a normal manner. Advantages of this power steering system The force needed to operate the steering wheel is reduced to only a fraction of that if the original effort. This much smaller force is then amplified by the ram cylinder to more then 6 times. This allows the driver to carry out those "heavy" maneuvers which otherwise required the maxium effort, for example; while parking, driving slowly to hitch a trailer, in difficult terrain etc.. The physical force (couple) applied to the steering wheel, however, will always give proportional amplification to the road wheels. As a result the vehicle will steer prompt, smooth, precise and above all safely. The ram is located at the end of the steering link and applies the force directly onto the wheels. This means that the rest of the linkages between the steering wheel and ram cylinder, like steering box and steering relay, including ball joints, are not subject to excessive forces that otherwise where applied to the system and thus reduces wear and increased back lash in the steering box. The ram system will also act as a hydraulic damper/stabilizer, absorbing the steering vibrations/movements that travel from the wheels, through the steering system back to the steering wheel giving better control and terained feel. The original self centering effect, while driving out of corners etc., is not affected, if adjusted properly. The power steering system's vavle is designed in a way that it allows to let through forces comming from the wheels that make the steering self center / drive straight (provided the toe-in and caster/camber settings are correctly set-up) Technical details of the power steering ram cylinder Summary Better maneuverability while parking, driving through/difficult terrain and when running larger/wider sized tyres Better control over the vehicle at both slow and high speed The stabilizing effect of the hydraulic cylinder which increases the safety of the vehicle No drastic changes or modifications are needed to fit the kit (and if required a full reconstruction of the original steering system is possible within a matter of hours).
