They really can do anything. I wouldn’t be surprised to find one climbing a tree! On Tuesday morning we head to an area of the farm called David’s Post to help set up a box trap. We get to work surrounding the cage with prickly branches; the spikes on these things are lethal! To entice leopards and co. half a warthog is left at the far side of the trap. We watch the procedure with a bizarre combination of horror and intrigue. Next we have our first bash at telemetry (tracking the collared leopard, Lucy), with absolutely no success. First, scientist, Kristina, demonstrates the equipment by searching for Induna, the tame(ish) leopard. The receiver begins beeping straight away. He’s close. Kristina spots him immediately; he’s mooching about near some caves but he disappears before I manage to catch a glimpse. We clamber back into our beloved Landy and set off to look for Lucy. We search all morning but fail to track her down. We have no idea where she is, but at least we know where she is not! ‘There’s something in the box trap!’ Lots of excitement on Wednesday morning as a honey badger is discovered. We arrive to change a camera trap just in time. We have a quick gander – it’s cute. It’s also hanging from the bars of the cage, fighting its way to freedom. The attempt is futile though. This honey badger is going nowhere – a fate it soon accepts, and preparations are made for its release. These involve everyone squeezing into the Land Rovers and shutting all of the doors and windows. This thing is no bigger than a small dog! But by all accounts they are aggressive little critters, and like leopards, they’ll seek revenge! One of the Land Rovers is used to pull the trap gate open. We wait for the great escape…We wait some more…nothing. A decision is made to move a few of the Land Rovers out of the way and eventually the honey badger makes a break for it. Success! Today we have our second crack at telemetry and after a few no-shows we hear a faint low beep. It’s Lucy! We try a few more locations to confirm her position before heading home. On the way we pause to watch the pair of young rhinos wandering along the river. I could watch them all day. But the giraffes are fast becoming my favourites. They appear to be as curious about us as we are about them. On our way back from collecting memory cards from the camera traps we stumble across one in the middle of the road 100 yards ahead of us. I expect it to make tracks but instead, a staring competition between human and giraffe commences. They’re so used to seeing Land Rovers driving around. Once it’s bored of us we head back to camp grinning like idiots. Kudus, warthogs, giraffes – all part of everyday life here.
