Then Land Rover's Freelander 2 really takes some beating. However, if your daily commute is more about tarmac than trailblazing, you might like to opt for this - the all-new, diesel-powered automatic version, which aims to combine mud-plugging promise with on-road refinement and driveability. What's more, the engine is quiet; with very little noise entering the cabin, comfortable seats and an elevated driving position, you can cover a considerable number of miles before you really start to feel the strain behind the wheelThe addition of the six-speed self-shifter to the oil-burner's options list has been a long time coming, given that the revamped Freelander was launched in December last year.It's set to be a big part of the range, however, with 40 per cent of UK buyers expected to choose it for their cars. The good news is that the coupling of auto box and derv power has been well worth the wait, not least because the system has a CommandShift feature for manual sequential gearchanges. This adds smooth, effortless driving, as well as refined cruising, to the diesel's current list of attributes.Delivering peak torque of 400Nm at 2,000rpm, the newcomer also has 43 per cent more power than its predecessor. It's very good to drive, too, with pleasantly weighted steering and an excellent ride. Under hard acceleration, power delivery is smooth and seamless. There's none of the usual frustrations of jerky ratio changes, while throttle response is very sharp. What's more, the engine is quiet; with very little noise entering the cabin, comfortable seats and an elevated driving position, you can cover a considerable number of miles before you really start to feel the strain behind the wheel.It's not cramped inside, either, and although the boot space seems modest, it's actually 38 per cent larger than the outgoing model. Capacity has risen from 546 to 755 litres with the rear seats in place.The company's impressive Terrain Response system - which switches between traction modes - is also standard in all but the entry-level model. There's a useful Hill Descent Control system, too.Prices start at £22,330 for the basic S trim level, which includes £1,370 for the optional automatic transmission box. However, the flagship HSE, seen here, is £32,330. The self-shifter might be the automatic choice, but at this price, the range-topper is too expensive. Off-road fans will be impressed by its ability on challenging terrain, while smart looks and a quality interior mean it's not too utilitarian to deter SUV buyers. The refined diesel engine offers an effortless drive with more power and better fuel economy than its predecessor, none of which is compromised by the smooth auto transmission. An impressive combination - but, at £32,330, it should be. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: New Reviews Land Rover Freelander Few compact SUVs can match the Land Rover Freelander’s premium image and driving dynamics on all surfaces. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: On the road price: £23,210 - £35,510 For : Desirability, upmarket cabin, refinement, ability on and off road Against : High prices, poor fuel economy, high loading sill Styling/Image Taking its cues from the bigger Range Rover Sport, the Freelander is a traditionally upright and chunky SUV. It looks a little dated alongside the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60, but the British car still has plenty of on-road presence. There’s also a comprehensive line-up of trims to choose from – S, GS, XS, SE, HSE and HST. All models get alloy wheels, and air-conditioning, while the range-topping HST is kitted-out with leather trim, heated seats and privacy glass.Interior/Practicality Climb aboard and you’ll find a cabin that serves-up decent practicality and space, while high quality materials and solid build create a premium feel. The high set driving position gives a commanding view of the road, and the dashboard is attractively styled and well-laid out. Lifting the large tailgate reveals a useful 755-litre luggage bay, which extends to 1,670-litres with the rear bench folded flat. The only downside is an extremely high sill that can make loading heavy objects a struggle.Engine/Performance Making an engine choice is straightforward, as Land Rover offers only two powerplants. Petrol fans get a Volvo derived 230bhp 3.2-litre straight six that’ll haul the heavyweight Freelander from standstill to 60mph in 8.4 seconds. However, you’ll pay the price at the pumps, as fuel consumption rarely rises above 20mpg. For most owners, the refined 2.2-litre oil-burner is the best choice. Co-developed with PSA Peugeot/Citroen, it delivers decent urge and will return 30mpg.Driving experience Land Rovers are famed for their incredible mud-plugging ability – and the Freelander is no exception. Few rivals can match it in the rough stuff, thanks to its hi-tech Terrain Response system. But the biggest surprise is the car’s agility on tarmac. Body roll is kept in check, while the steering is direct and well-weighted. Better still, a supple ride and refined cabin make the Land Rover a fine choice for long journeys. If your budget can stretch to another £1,340, then we’d recommend specifying the slick-shifting six-speed auto gearbox. Ownership CostsPrepare for big bills if you want to run a Freelander as your company car. Even the relatively efficient 2.2-litre diesel engine emits 194g/km of CO2. Factor in the high price, and it will cost you more than almost all of its rivals. Pick the petrol engine and the bills get even bigger. Residuals aren’t a strong point either, with the oil-burner struggling to retain 40 percent of its value.Safety/EnvironmentA five star EuroNCAP rating marks the Freelander out as safe choice for its occupants. With CO2 emissions of 265g/km, the petrol powered Land Rover won’t be at the top of an eco-friendly buyer’s shortlist. However, the British firm is gearing up to launch a stop-start version of the diesel-engined car, which is claimed to benefit from a 20 percent reduction in fuel use. To cap off its environmental efforts, the company also promises to offset the carbon emission of all new models for the first 45,000 miles.Our Choice 2.2 TD4 SE £28,510 What Next COMPARE CAR LOANS COMPARE CAR INSURANCE For more breaking car news and reviews, subscribe to Auto Express magazine. By GLYN17 on 22 December, 2009, 10:08am Vague Steering On a recent test drive, I was not at all happy with the vague feel of the steering around the straight ahead position on normal roads. I was sufficiently disapointed to be put off buying a Freelander. Off road - absolutely brilliant & unbeatable for the money. On road, oh dear! The electric power steering set-up meant that you had to overcome significant resistance to move from straight ahead position. Most disconcerting! Once over that initial resistance, it was ok again. I've not seen this in any reports, but 3 owners I have spoken to, all agreed that their vehicles demonstrate the same tendancy. Expert Rating: Land Rover think theyve built the best-looking compact 4x4 on the market with the Freelander. The HST version takes the chunky styling to the extreme. Andy Enright reportsThe merits of the Land Rover Freelander 2 are already well appreciated. Many sell on the strength of the cohesive styling and the Freelander HST model is edgier still, the body modifications giving the car a more aggressive, urban look. The effect may not for everyone but it may well attract new customers to the marque.Its been interesting watching the Land Rover Freelander develop from rather gauche arriviste to something that could genuinely be purchased by old money. Of course, the Land Rover badge helps with the expedition of that process but theres no substitute for time and solid product development. Its hard to believe quite how far the Freelander has come in the years since it was first launched in 1997. What was then a high quality concept but rather patchily executed vehicle has been beasted into shape with the Freelander 2 knocking the rough edges away and resulting in a very polished performer. Some groused that with no low range gearbox, the Freelander still wasnt proper, but drive one off road and its clear that clever electronics do much of the work and a low range box would just be an irrelevant waste of money to 95 per cent of customers. With the development of the HST model, Land Rover has given us a street-biased Freelander thats all about attitude. It follows on the heels of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport HST versions which, while about as subtle as an elbow to the ocular orbit, both undeniably have presence to spare and, if Land Rover dealers are to be believed, are creating quite a buzz."One thing the Freelander HST doesnt lack is presence."Choose the 2.2-litre Td4 version of the Freelander HST and it will hit 60mph from rest in 10.5 seconds, so its not among the quickest of the diesel compact 4x4s but it always feels keen and puppyish, the 158bhp four-cylinder engine delivering its maximum torque at 2,000rpm with peak power chiming in at 4,000rpm, giving a decently wide power band. The 3. 2-litre petrol HST packs 230bhp and will get to 60mph in 8.4 seconds and keep accelerating until that not insubstantial frontal area fails to punch a hole through the atmosphere, by which time 124mph should be showing on the clocks. Both get Land Rovers excellent Terrain Response system for off-road driving, which goes a long way towards excusing the Freelander for its lack of a proper low-range transfer case. Its doubtful too many Freelander HSTs will get their wheels overly dirty though. Many small 4x4s are set up to ride firmly on road, their manufacturers knowing that they will rarely, if ever, be subjected to off-road use. The Freelander is different and was engineered with off-road use very much in mind but the HST has a different bias and has stiffened springs and a lowered ride height to cope with sportier on-road driving. As with all Freelanders, the shape is instantly familiar, albeit one which looks as if vehicular geneticists have artificially inseminated a Freelander with some purebred Range Rover DNA. The MK1 Freelander was one of those rare exceptions a vehicle that just got better and better looking throughout its lifetime and the second generation car has upped the ante again. Whilst it retains the chunky good looks, Land Rover has imbued it with a far more premium look and feel, which is just as well given the prices being asked. In case you werent so familiar with the Freelander 2, its a very different vehicle from the original. Its 50mm longer and 109mm wider but the wheels have been moved further towards each corner, freeing up another 105mm in the cars wheelbase, making rear seat accommodation a whole lot better. Weight has crept up to over 1,900kg in the process but a parallel improvement in safety and refinement is a transaction most customers will be willing to accept. The interior is a somewhat unusual mix of very high quality materials with some surprisingly cheap plastics. Your local Land Rover dealer will charge you £31,990 for the diesel HST variant that almost all buyers will choose a premium of around £1,000 over the previous flagship HSE model. For the petrol model, you can expect to pay £35,125. One thing the Freelander HST doesnt lack is presence. The bluff front end differentiates it instantly from standard Freelander models. The HST gets a Sports Styling Pack with front and rear bumper aprons, side sill mouldings and a rear roof spoiler. The 10-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels are finished in shadow chrome and fill out the arches beautifully to give the HST an aggressive, hunkered down appearance that works well with the chunky styling. Privacy glass and metallic paint are also standard. As with the HSE, HST buyers can expect leather seat facings and a 14-speaker Dolby Pro Logic stereo. Its no use ignoring the fact that all this makes the Freelander into a very expensive piece of tackle but sales figures suggest that many see it as a price worth paying. Once youve got over the initial purchase price, ongoing running costs are reasonably manageable. Theres certainly no grumbles about fuel economy for the Td4 model most will buy, the claimed 37. 7mpg fuel figure being one of the best in the class despite the hefty kerb weight. On test, we averaged just under 29mpg, but that was with a notoriously lead-footed crew of drivers and the 68-litre fuel tank gave a very respectable touring range. The V6 petrol engined car doesnt fare so well with a combined fuel economy figure of 25.2mpg and CO2 emissions of 265g/km. On our test route, a bit of spirited driving saw the average drop to significantly below 20mpg, so youll need to be rather saintly to equal Land Rovers economy figures. The Freelander HST also looks set to offer extremely strong residuals. The Freelander 2 is no shabby performer in this regard and the flagship HST will be in especially strong demand. Insurance quotations might not be quite as friendly as with some rivals, insurers having cottoned onto the fact that any car thats respectable off road may generate a few claims from pernickety customers with little or no no-claims bonus for items such as scratched alloy wheels or cracked front spoilers. The Land Rover Freelander 2 HST is a very clever piece of marketing. Strip away the HST fripperies and you have an excellent foundation, the Freelander 2 now being the sort of vehicle Land Rover would have designed from scratch, it being no great secret that the company inherited the original Freelander and were forced to bring an average design up to speed. The HST wont find favour with the type of rural buyers who have taken the Freelander to their hearts but as a cheaper and less cumbersome alternative to a Range Rover Sport, it works surprisingly well. Both engines are decent powerplants but the Td4 diesel will certainly outsell the rather thirsty V6 petrol unit. Prices start at £31,990 but the market has shown that it will certainly pay this sort of money for a top end compact 4x4. With the likes of Audi and BMW getting their game faces on, the Freelander 2 HST wont have things easy.Facts At A Glance CAR: Land Rover Freelander 2 HST range PRICES: £31,990-£35,125 on the road INSURANCE GROUPS: 13-14 CO2 EMISSIONS: 194-265g/km PERFORMANCE: [Td4] Max Speed 115mph / 0-60mph 10.5s FUEL CONSUMPTION: [Td4] (urban) 30.6mpg / (extra urban) 45.5mpg / (combined) 37.7mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Seven airbags, anti lock brakes, ESP WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: Length/Width/Height mm 4500/2180/1715 Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Wednesday February 27 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

It is still covered by the Land Rover Warranty until April 2011.
The HST looks much more like a Range Rover Sport than the standard car, and this one is in the best colour combination (I think) which is Stornoway Grey with Alpaca leather interior (which is in great condition as it is only me that is usually in the car). It has the Panoramic sunroof, that lets in loads of light so it is really light and airy inside the car.
With the snow all around us, this is the vehicle to have! It has a special Snow Mode and hill descent control that just takes over when you are on snow and ice and it is SO safe - I have been ferrying my staff into the office the past few days and it has been as solid as a rock!
It has covered 49K miles without a single fault; most of my miles are motorway cruising at 70mph between Hampshire and Bath and it has been Main Dealer serviced regardless of cost. It has just been serviced and I had all of the brakes replaced at great cost (the first time since new), more good news - Freelanders only need servicing every 15000 miles!
It has good tyres all round and they last for ages - the first set lasted almost 40K miles!
It has all of the available extras, including the chrome side tubes, rubber boot mat, Alpine multi CD, the new 2009/10 Sat Nav Disc Don't forget the heated seats and heated windscreen - the frozen windscreen on a frosty morning is banished in 10 seconds flat; fantastic.
It is in great condition, with no bumps or scrapes and it was Diamond Brite treated from new inside and out, so it comes up really shiny with just a quick wash.
I will have it fully valetted and polished inside-and-out for the new owner.

I will not be accepting less than £20K as I have been offered just under this by a dealer. ThanksQuestions and answers about this item No questions or answers have been posted about this item.
