David Wilkins finds the new Freelander equally commanding on or off the road – but what do our testers think? First, its activities are focused on the market for 4x4s, a sector which, after several boom years, is less fashionable than it was because of environmental concerns. Second, Land Rover's owner, Ford, is considering several bids for the company, and could end up selling it. My guess is that Land Rover will survive these problems. There have been difficult times before, but what's kept Land Rover going is its ability consistently to come up with hit products. Just think of the original versions of the Range Rover, the Discovery and Freelander, which all took the company into new, lucrative market segments. And when the time has come to update its cars, Land Rover has always followed the same successful recipe – substantial under-the-skin improvements while retaining the best of its styling themes. This latest version of the Freelander is no exception. It looks similar to the first Freelander in almost every respect but it's a fair bit larger. Pretty much everything under the skin is different, though, reflecting a well funded development effort under Ford's ownership. The cabin of the Freelander 2 is an impressive affair, the best aspect of which is Land Rover's so-called Command driving position, which means that drivers have a raised view of the road similar to that offered by the company's larger models, a feature that distances this car from the " soft" off-roaders with which it competes on price. It also has much of the off-roading kit fitted to bigger Land Rovers as well. There is no air suspension or low range transmission, but the Freelander 2 offers other technologies such as Hill Descent Control and, on most models, the Terrain Response system that allows drivers to select the best settings for given conditions via a simple dial. On the road, the Freelander 2 performs well for a vehicle of this type. The strong diesel engine gives it an unexpected liveliness and the well-sorted suspension means this can be exploited to achieve impressive journey times. Our test car, the top HSE model, carries a list price of more than £30,000. That looks high, but let's not complain too much because it represents the sort of premium pricing that might allow a new owner of the company to justify keeping production at UK sites. If, like me, you're a bit of a cheapskate, you'll be interested to hear that the basic Freelander 2 – which has fewer trimmings but shares most of its mechanical bits with our test car – costs a little over £20,000. That looks like a bit of a bargain to me. The 1 has a distinctive style, the 2 looks bland. However, the 2 is superior in every other way. The ride is smoother over bumps, yet it doesn't feel as ponderous on faster bends. Noise levels are noticeably reduced. At 70mph, it feels smooth and refined. The dashboard initially seems a little overwhelming but everything is in order of priority. The interior styling is also a big improvement. There's plenty of life left in our 1, but when replacement time comes I won't waste time looking at anything else. Cream upholstery is a strange choice for an all-terrain vehicle. There are myriad switches and controls, not very well laid out; will they ever all be used? The Freelander has the power and technology to cope with Northumberland's hills and roads. The heated front window is unusual, and helpful for a northern winter. The driving position is comfortable and noise from the diesel engine hardly noticeable. However, my business objective of keeping motoring costs as low as possible would not be met with this. Although big, the drive is smooth, steering never feels heavy, and the comfortable driver's seat, like a leather throne, even has a heater. I found the cabin extremely user-friendly. Visibility is excellent, with the minor exception of a blind spot caused by the wide window pillar on the driver's side. The gearbox is a dream and boot size ample. For me, the best features are its display panels, and its crowning glory is the built-in navigation system – efficient and clear. For those of us who use the car as a workhorse and travel long distances with full loads, this does the job without fuss and with a touch of style. The trim on our model was a kind of brushed chrome as we didn't like the wood effect. All the controls are very easy to get to know and feel comfortable with and fall easily to hand. After an hour driving this car it felt like I had been using it for months. The quality of the fitting is excellent. Not like its poor predecessor which was renown for it unreliability. Switches feel solid and give a reassuring 'click' while other controls feel well made and thoughtfully placed. All the dials are easy to read with more than enough information. The sat nav is clear and easy to use but suffers from the same problem most other in-car GPS has, you can't update the points of interest to include speed traps, or other things you might specifically want as you can on removable units like TomTom. The one in the Freelander though is clear and works on a full postcode giving you very clear instructions, alternative routes and a very effective rerouting traffic management option which will guide you around traffic accidents and hold-ups.The car has a 6 cd multchanger and a radio with all the usual functions. It is blue tooth compatible and so has its own blue tooth hands free which works faultlessly. it has an alpine speaker system throughout which gives Dolby surround. Additionally, it has an input for an Ipod which allows the person in the back to listen via earphones to different music to the people in the front. If, like us, you have a teenager, this is a Godsend.PerformanceThe Freelander is never going to win prizes for beauty nor speed nor fuel econonly however, it does all very well. It will cruise effortlessly at above the national speed limit (or so I am told :) ) and our first tank of diesel gave us over 400 miles of combined cruising. In real terms, this means that it is actually more economical than our previous diesel Peugeot. That surprised us greatly. Its quite perky in getting up to a decent speed and feels controlled and sure footed on the road. There are a variety of drive setting even on the automatic allowing it to go off-road, on loose terrain, up and down steep slopes and even easy hill starts. The automatic gearbox is a joy and has the option to become switchomatic as you require. All the terrain control are by the top of the gearstick but usually work automatically unless you want to dial them in yourself.Parking the car is a joy. Far easier than other cars even though it is twice the size seemingly. With front and rear sensors you know exactly where you are and the mirrors change as you switch into reverse allowing you to see your back wheels. It really is incredibly easy to park this beast.The rear space is great both for passengers (loads of leg room air conditioning and headphone socket) as well as luggage. The rear section has a reversible floor which you can turn over if you have wet or dirty items to put in and don't want to soil the carpet.ConclusionAbsolutely brilliant. Much more economical and easy to drive than we expected and loaded with features such as automatic headlights, wipers and as daft as it sounds, that wonderful key fob which you insert into the dashboard rather than a key. The Td4 was by far the best of the 3 that I owned. For one, by then, Landrover's build quality had improved drastically. By comparison, where the 1.8 litre spent 3 months in the workshop and the 2 litre Rover 6 weeks in the ......the period I owned it (12 months). Drove the Td4 on-road, off-road on rocky terrain, on the beach, and in muddy conditions. It performed much better than the 2 previous models I had owned for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Td4 delivers a lot more torque than the other two models - especially useful for overtaking, and for offroad 4x4-ing. It had about 46,000 miles on the clock and was in good condition. The commercial version is a lowest specified standard 3 door freelander that has had the seats and windows removed and a proper loadbed installed. This is all done by Landrover Specialist Vehicles so is done very well. The commercail version has the advantage of ......by VAT registered organisations. My one also came with a rear window grill and bulkhead between the drivers cabin and the load bay which means that it looks quite secure. I do a lot of motorway miles and find this a breeze to drive even on the 500 mile trips up to Scotland that I make, even after 8 hours I do not feel wrecked.
